After submitting your college applications, most schools will send you an email confirming receipt. That email usually includes instructions to set up your student or applicant portal—your personalized dashboard for that college.

These portals are the college’s primary way of communicating with you, so it’s absolutely essential to activate and check them regularly.

🧭 Step-by-Step: How to Set Up Your Portals

1️⃣ Watch Your Email After You Apply

  • Each college will send a confirmation email with:

    • A link to their student/applicant portal

    • A temporary username or ID number

    • Instructions to create a password or activate your account

📌 This may take anywhere from a few hours to a few days—check your spam folder just in case!

2️⃣ Activate Your Portal

Follow the college’s directions to:

  • Set your password

  • Confirm your login credentials

  • Access your application dashboard

💡 Some colleges may require you to verify your email or complete additional security steps.

3️⃣ Save Everything Securely

  • Bookmark each portal in your browser

  • Store usernames and passwords in a password manager, digital keychain, or secure notes app

  • Keep a master list of your colleges, portal links, and login info—this will save you tons of time later

📲 What You’ll Use the Portal For

Once inside, you’ll often be able to:

  • View your application status (and see if your app is complete)

  • Track required documents (like transcripts, test scores, rec letters, or financial aid forms)

  • View admissions decisions

  • Check and accept your financial aid award

  • Register for admitted student events or housing, if accepted

✏️ GradMap Pro Tips

  • Check your portals at least once a week. Some colleges will not email or text you about missing materials—they expect you to check the portal.

  • Many colleges will NOT review your application until all materials are received. If something’s missing, the clock may keep ticking without you knowing.

  • Don’t wait until the deadline to submit your application. Submitting early gives you time to catch and correct any issues that appear in the portal.

  • Add your portal access info to your college checklist to stay organized.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR PORTALS REGULARLY. Colleges will post additional requirements and updates in the applicant/student portal. Sometimes they'll place deadlines to respond. Please remember that they will not hunt you down to get the information they need. It’s your job as a college applicant to stay informed, respond to requests, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

Let’s make sure you’re connected, organized, and ready to go! 💻
