Welcome to October! 🍂 For seniors, it’s officially college application crunch time. For underclassmen, it’s a great moment to start laying the groundwork for your own college journey. Whether you’re submitting applications or building your future resume, this month offers powerful opportunities to take meaningful steps forward.

Here’s a breakdown of what to focus on, customized for both seniors and underclassmen.

🎯 1. Tackle Those Early Application Deadlines

Seniors:

  • Finalize and proofread your Early Action (EA) or Early Decision (ED) applications

  • Upcoming deadlines to note: October 15 and November 1

  • Double-check that your:

    • Essays are polished and personal

    • Recommendation letters have been requested and submitted

    • Transcripts and test scores are sent (if required)

Underclassmen:

  • Start identifying teachers, coaches, or mentors you might want to ask for letters later

  • Begin your college research wish list—what schools or programs stand out to you?

✍️ 2. Polish Up Those Essays

Seniors:

  • This is the time for final edits—make your personal statement and supplemental essays reflective of who you are

  • Ask a teacher or counselor to review them for grammar, tone, and clarity

Underclassmen:

  • Start a reflection journal about your experiences, challenges, or passions

  • Consider drafting a practice personal statement to build comfort with essay writing

🎤 3. Sign Up for Optional Interviews

Seniors:

  • If your EA/ED schools offer alumni or admissions interviews, schedule one—it’s a great chance to show interest and learn more about the school

Underclassmen:

  • Practice talking about your strengths, goals, and interests

  • Try mock interviews with a family member or participate in public speaking activities

📂 4. Keep Track of Deadlines & Submissions

Seniors:

  • Stay organized with a calendar or digital tracker

  • Track:

    • Application deadlines

    • Financial aid & FAFSA submissions

    • Scholarship deadlines

  • Don’t forget: Your CPSI Portal has a personalized application calendar

Underclassmen:

  • Create a College Planning folder to store ideas, materials, and advice

  • Make a year-by-year timeline (e.g., when to take the PSAT, start test prep, explore majors)

🧘‍♀️ 5. Take Care of YOU

Seniors:

  • Prioritize self-care—college planning is important, but so is your mental health.

  • Stay balanced by setting aside time for fun, exercise, and rest

Underclassmen:

  • Join clubs or activities that bring you joy and build your identity

  • These experiences are not just great for personal growth—they’ll shape your future college applications too

🍁 Extra Tips for Underclassmen: Make This Fall Count

  • Explore Majors & Careers: Research what excites you, then find classes, clubs, or summer programs that align

  • Set Academic Goals: Focus on strong study habits and challenging yourself with honors/AP or advanced coursework.

  • Get Involved: Dive into extracurriculars like clubs, athletics, or service projects.

  • Build Relationships with Teachers: Engaging in class now makes it easier to request recommendations later
